Keeping Your Cat Happy and Healthy

September is Happy Healthy Cat Month! Kitties are very easy keepers, but they aren’t as independent as they want us to think. Just like any other pet, Fluffy needs good care to truly thrive. Read on as a Forest Hill, MD vet discusses keeping your cat purring.

Good Food

Proper nutrition is crucial to your cat’s health and well-being. Offer Fluffy a high-quality cat food. Don’t overindulge her, though: if your kitty becomes obese, she’ll be at risk of some very dangerous health issues. Follow your vet’s advice.

Litterbox

Your cat’s litterbox should be in a spot that is private, easy to reach, and out of direct sunlight. Keep the litterbox clean by scooping it out daily and changing the litter every week.

Veterinary Care

Taking your cat to the vet regularly is very important. We recommend that all kitties be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their exams, vaccines, and parasite control. If you see any signs of sickness, such as hiding, poor grooming, fever, lethargy, vomiting, or litterbox issues, call your vet right away. Ask your vet for more information on your pet’s veterinary care needs.

Safety

One of the best things you can do for Fluffy’s well-being is simply to keep her inside. Outdoor kitties face some very serious dangers, such as traffic, gators, and weather. They are also more likely to get lost, hurt, or even killed.

Kittyproofing

Cats are very frisky, and have quite a knack for getting into mischief. Do some basic kittyproofing to keep your pet safe. Remove toxic plants; plastic bags and tires; wires and cores; and anything small or sharp.

Toys/Stimulation

Although kitties spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping, your cat will still need something to do when she’s awake. Offer your cute pet lots of toys, and take time to play with her regularly. This will be great for her, both physically and mentally. Your pet will also appreciate a comfy window seat with a good view.

Purr Activation

Pay lots of attention to your feline friend, so that she feels loved and safe. Talk to Fluffy, play with her, and let her doze off on your lap. Kitty purrs are truly precious gifts!
