Autumn Care For Cats

Summer is in the rear-view mirror now: it’s officially fall. This can be a fun time of year for cats. Fluffy gets to sniff at all sorts of seasonal decorations, and amuse herself by watching falling leaves. However, the seasonal changes do bring some specific concerns for our feline pals, so you will want to take a few precautions to keep your kitty happy, healthy, and purring. A local Bel Air, MD vet discusses autumn cat care below.

Preventative Care

Fleas, ticks, and parasites may not be as prevalent in fall as they are in warmer weather, but they aren’t going away completely. In fact, many will try even harder to get into Fluffy’s warm fur. Vaccines are also important. Keep up with your cat’s recommended care!

Decorations

Kitties are very curious, and tend to be very interested in anything that you bring into their domains. Keep your pet’s playful nature in mind. Anything that could be dangerous should be kept well away from Fluffy’s cute paws. That includes toxic plants, such as chrysanthemums and autumn crocuses; wires and cords; plastic bags, ties, and films; and anything small or sharp. Candles are also a concern. Keep candles in high spots, where your feline friend can’t reach them.

Outdoor Hazards

Fluffy may love exploring leaf piles and terrorizing chipmunks and squirrels, but she’s really much better off staying inside and just daydreaming about these things. Kitties that are allowed to roam freely face some very serious dangers! Toxins are one big issue at this time of year. That includes things like antifreeze puddles; pesticides; fertilizers; rodenticides; molds; and mushrooms. Traffic is another hazard. Keep your pet safe and sound inside. This goes double for black cats!

Kitty Comforts

Taking a few small precautions will go a long way here. It’s going to get dark earlier and earlier over the next few months. Consider leaving a nightlight on for your kitty to help her get around after dark. You’ll also want to make sure that Fluffy’s bed (or beds) are in warm spots that aren’t chilly or hard to reach. Grooming is also important. Brushing your feline pal will remove dead fur and dander from her coat. This will help keep her warm and comfy.
